President Mamnoon Hussain has termed the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor project as a lifeline for Pakistanis and warned that propagandas against the project would only harm the country. The Pentagon has confirmed that despite several attempts on his life, ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is still alive and in charge. Imtiaz Ahmed who was Pakistan’s first wicket-keeper and two of the survivors of first test team passed away. He had been suffering from breathing issues and died at the age of 88. He was the oldest cricketer of Pakistan. The late had played 41 test for the national team from 1952 to 1962. In this ten years of career, he was the first Pakistani to score a double century in 1955 against New Zealand in Lahore.
According to the International Federation of Journalists, 93 journalists got killed in 2016 around the globe with Iraq and Afghanistan being the deadliest countries for them. 29 more journalists died in plane crashes in Colombia and Russia. The Brazilian wife of Kyriakos Amiridis, Greece’s ambassador to Brazil who was murdered earlier in Rio, has been accused of plotting her husband’s murder along with her police officer lover Sergio Gomez. The police officer has confessed to the crime and having an affair with the woman. Police has taken the pair in custody along with Moreira’s 24-year-old cousin who also allegedly took part in the crime.
Finance Minister Ishaq Dar confirmed on Saturday that the prices of petroleum products would remain unchanged in January. The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority had earlier recommended an increase of Rs0.30 per liter in the price of petrol and an increase of Rs.3.94 in the price of high-speed diesel. However, the government has decided to subsidize petroleum products by Rs4 billion to maintain current levels.

Saudia Arabia has invited the regional rival Iran for discussion and talk on the return of their pilgrims. The Supreme Court of Pakistan has constituted a bench comprising of five judges to resume hearing of Panama Gate case from January 4. The new chief justice of Pakistan Nisar will not be on the panel. Previously the chief justice has denied hearing the case and court ordered that the both the parties will start from the beginning. Later on, the retirement of previous chief justice caused delay and damage too.
Pakistani start-up Patari which is an online music streaming website and app has secured funding again. The company is getting $200,000 from Sarmayacar, an investor syndicate. Dr. Umar Saif, chairman Punjab Information Technology Board was appreciative of Patari’s work and said he wished all start-ups luck. The newly sworn in Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Saqib Nisar has already formed a five member bench that will hear the Panama Leaks Case. The bench includes Justice Ejaz Afzal, Justice Gulzar Ahmad, Justice Azmat Saeed Sheikh, Justice Ijazul Ahsan and will be headed by Justice Asif Saeed Khosa. They will preside over the next hearing of the case due to be held on the 4 of January in 2017.
After ten years of no local body government, Lahore has finally sworn in a Lord Mayor and Deputy Mayors. Retired Colonel Mubashir Javaid took the oath as Lahore’s new Lord Mayor. The event was also attended by the Capital City Police Officer of Lahore and the city’s Deputy Commissioner. The crowd at the event was overjoyed and chanted slogans in support of the new mayors.
According to a report, the eight of the bigger shrines in Punjab under the Auqaf and Religious Affairs department have experienced an increase of 8% in their income. Data Darbar went up by PKR 15 million, Hazrat Peer Maki’s shrine went up by PKR 1.9 million and more. Provincial authorities for Sindh have devised a very strict security plan for Karachi to be implemented on New Years night. The authorities have blocked all but 2 roads leading to the sea. Section 144 has also been imposed in the city while swimming in the sea has also been prohibited for the night. Senior Superintendent of Police South, Saqib Ismail said these measures are there to avoid unpleasantness.
The last session of 2016 was calculated for the Pakistan Stock Exchange. The calculation came to show that the PSX had provided for a return of 46%; making it the top performing stock exchange in Asia and the 5th best one in the world! Experts attributed this success to the falling interest rate and rising investor confidence in the market. This percentage was a surprise as the rate has usually been 24%.
According to a study conducted in Berlin, Germany, the grandparents who occasionally assist and help in their community or family in taking care of the children, live longer than other older people. The study however stated that full time custody of children may have a negative effect on their health but having them occasionally can be beneficial for them, wrote the authors in a research journal.
Two bombs were blasted in a busy market in Central Baghdad killing at least 21 and injuring over 40 individuals. The blasts occurred during the rush hour on Saturday. According to the Iraqi officials no militant outfit has accepted the responsibility of the blasts but Islamic State regularly targets the busy areas of Baghdad city. The blasts went off in cars’ spare parts shop in the Sinak during rush hour.
Amanda Nunes destroyed Rhonda Rousey in a 48-second long UFC title fight. It was Rousey’s first match after she lost her championship belt to Holmes about an year ago. A joint memorial service and side-by-side burial will be arranged for the mother Debbie Reynolds and daughter Carrie Fisher. Both died with cardiac arrest. Todd Fisher, son of Debbie and younger brother of Carrie Fisher said that he got a glimpse of hummingbirds while visiting Forest Lawn Memorial Park in the Hollywood Hills and that convinced him that this is the ideal place for their side by side burial.
United States President-elect Donald Trump has appreciated the reaction of Russian President Vladimir Putin over Spy and hacking dispute between both states. “Great move on delay (by V. Putin) – I always knew he was very smart!” Trump tweeted. Earlier Putin refused to take a tit-for-tat step in response of 35 Russian embassy staffers’ expulsion by USA. “We will not expel anyone,” said President Putin.

Justice Mian Saqib Nisar has taken oath as new Chief Justice of Pakistan today. He wis replacing Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali who is leaving office after serving for 468 days. Justice Nisar is the 25th Chief Justice of Pakistan. He became Lahore High Court judge in 1998 and has been serving as Justice in Supreme Court since 2010. Justice Nisar Saqib will be Chief Justice of Pakistan till January 19, 2017.
Chinese government has announced that it will ban all trade and processing activities of ivory by the end of 2017. The conservation and animal rights organization praised the decision and called it “historic” and “for future of elephants”. The decision came after a resolution forwarded in Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species in October. China has largest ivory trade market in the world.
Federal Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal has said that China Pakistan Economic Corridor is a game changer for Pakistan and nine more industrial projects have been included in it. He announced this after a Joint Core Committee (JCC) of CPEC. Out of these nine, two projects will be set up by federal government while rest will belong to Punjab, Balochistan, Sindh, KP, Gilgit, AJK and FATA .
Pakistan will soon present a dossier in United Nations regarding arrest of Indian spy Kulbhushan Jhadav and attempted interference by Indian submarine into Pakistani waters. The dossier has been finalized and will be handed over to new UN General Secretary Antonio Guterres by Pakistani United Nnations’ ambassador Dr Maliha Lodhi. New General Secretary of UN Mr Guettres will assume office from January 2.
Minister for Interior Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said that around 450,000 fake Computerized National Identity Cards have been blocked during the last three years, while 32,000 passports were also revoked. He claimed that previous governments took no action against bogus identity cards before 2011, but the present government did the impossible and started national re-verification campaign of CNICs.
Thirty-one former Punjab Inspector Generals have termed the proposed civil administration law as illegal & called it civil admiration’s crude move to curtail police authority. The former police officials in a joint statement vowed to resist proposed ordinance at all forums including the court of laws. They also alleged that this ordinance is in conflict with Police Order 2002 & is an attempt to subvert it.
Punjab cabinet has passed the civil administration ordinance 2016 on Friday and CM Punjab Shahbaz Sharif said that it aims to empower the local governments and grant them financial independence. He also announced that the local governments will be given 44 percent additional funds than the previous year. The Finance Department has terminated 299 posts including, including DCO and EDCO.
It is for the first time after 2011 that December has passed without any rain, while there is also no prediction of downpour in January. Pakistan Meteorological Department analysts said that 2016 was extremely hot due to climate changes, warned that such temperatures may prevail in the country and suggested that steps need to be taken in order to deal with such changes.
Citing an “immediate and severe” risk to Western tourists, Israeli anti-terrorism department has issued a severe warning against traveling to India. The warning said, “A particular emphasis should be put on events in the coming days in connection with beach and club parties celebrating the New Year where a concentration of tourists will be high” &recommended tourists to avoid participating in such parties.
US President-elect Donald Trump has praised Russian President Vladimir Putin for not ordering expulsions of US diplomats after Washington expelled 35 Russian diplomats earlier. Trump called it a great move by Kremlin and said that Russia would not lower itself to the level of “kitchen” diplomacy”. Trump said during his election campaign that he was ready to begin a new relationship with Russia.
Minister for Planning, Development and Reform Ahsan Iqbal told on Friday that Pakistan and China would set up nine industrial zones in the country under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. Two industrial zones will be set up by the federal government in Islamabad and Karachi, while the rest will be established in Punjab, Sindh, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan, Fata and Azad Kashmir.
